| History |
| Under a Trust Deed of 14th December, 1931, the land
was transferred by Mrs D.R. Haszard of Milford Hall to herself and others as Trustees and
given to the Village for the erection of a Village Hall or Institute to be used for
the purpose of physical and mental recreation, social, moral and intellectual development
through the medium of reading and recreational rooms for the benefit of the inhabitants of
Berkswich. Berkswich stretched from
the entrance gates to Shugborough at Milford to the canal at Radford. The present Hall was built by public subscription
from the inhabitants. The Management
Committee was required to provide facilities for local groups such as Scouts and Guides
and W.I. for a wide range of activities including meetings, concerts, dances and the sale
of works. In spite of its appearance the Hall
is only a wooden hut to which brick built toilets, kitchen and a Committee room have been
added. Walton Village Hall is a purpose built wooden hall as can be seen from this photo taken in c1945.
Nowadays, the hall serves the localities of Walton on the Hill, Baswich, Wildwood and Hillcroft Park. The hall is in good company with the local BT Telephone Exchange to the rear and the Tennis Club at the side. There is also the Scout Hut at the end of the lane.
